Editor's Pick MOST CREATIVE WAY TO SAVE THE DATE

If you want to save a few trees whilst you save the date, turn to husband-and-wife team Lance Wagner and Trixie Lane at Seattle Retro Photography for DVD or online videos made using an old-time approach. Photographer Wagner uses photos stills to create a silent-film-style video complete with captions to re-create your proposal or love story, with the grand finale announcing your wedding date. Makeup artist Lane styles hair, makeup and the retro costumes (which can range from 1920s flapper attire to ’60s mod). The process is a gas; the result, darling and oh so fun.

Mad Men–style Family Portraits

BY: SEATTLE MAG'S KAVITA VARM-WHITE

THE MOD SQUAD - family portraits
Fans of the hit show Mad Men have been feeling at a loss ever since the network powers-that-be announced the show’s fifth season won’t air until March 2012. May we suggest a way to get your Mad fix and also get ahead on the annual chore of taking a pic for this year’s holiday card? Take a classic family portrait with a decidedly retro twist at Cedar Park–based Seattle Retro Photography (seattleretrophotography.com), an offshoot of Old School Pinups, the vintage, boudoir-style studio run by stylist Trixie Lane and former L.A. celebrity photographer Lance Wagner. Lane does hair, makeup and wardrobe that channel your inner Don and Betty, and glams up the kiddos as well. Photos are taken in one of three period-accurate sets—we adore the Mid-Century Living Room, with its golden vinyl couch and recliner, made of material from the interior of a ’50s Cadillac—and you take your pick of totally un-PC props, such as fake cigarettes and pretend martinis. The result: a cheeky, theatrical look that screams Hollywood yesteryear.

Our visit to Seattle Retro Photography was nothing like what I expected a photo shoot to be.  We had just gotten married and wanted to do something fun to supplement the wedding photos.

When we arrived we were greeted right away and the fun began.  We were put in outfits and placed in some great scenes.  It felt like I was on a movie set.  The entire time Lance and Trixie were working with us, we felt like the stars of the show.  In the end we got some great photos that made a math teacher look good (Lance has a great eye behind the lens), but we also got some great stories.  You'll never believe all the places and people Lance has had the chance to capture on film.  His memories made it easy to relax and enjoy the photo shoot!
I have and will continue to reccomend them to my friends.

We had an amazing time at the studio. Lance and Trixie are fun, professional, thoughtful, and very good at what they do. My wife Sarah showed up first and Trixie did her makeup and hair magic, then a while later I showed up with the kids. Trixie and Lance both made the kids feel comfortable and kept them entertained. Our hosts were patient and kind and made the overall experience enjoyable enough that both kids have asked about doing it again! It's amazing to think an eight year old and a four year old would ask to do family portraits again! The kids also really enjoyed Lance and Trixie's pets and especially playing fetch down the hall!

When we received the first run of photos we were blown away. All four of us looked awesome and with the set and outfits the time machine effect was perfect. Lance has such an eye for poses, sets, and capturing fun moments with the kids that we had a difficult time narrowing down which pictures we wanted blown up for framing. I'm happy this time in our family life was captured in such a fun and unique way! I'm certain that years from now it'll be our coolest and most interesting set of family portraits. Some of the couple's shots with me and my wife are awesome as well. We're all very happy we did it.
